Goodbye Yellow Man

YcfWhat would have been, and already is, Malaysia’s most popular and loved icon….is sadly coming to an end…Yes people, Yellow Man, or officially known as the Yellow Coverage Fellow (YCF), the little plump Digi icon that follows you everywhere, giving you the best receptions in the country, is leaving us for good….or so I think. Let me share my story.

Three days ago, 1st of July to be exact, my friends called me up to go YUM-CHA, right after the Ipoh International Run. Of course, with no bad feelings in mind, I leisurely walked right to the desired mamak stall. But then, I noticed the sky was getting gloomy (wah drama I tell you)….

One of my friend’s sister, I shall refer to her as X, was sitting down, looked as gloomy as the sky. Little did I know, I was to get even gloomier. As I sat down to order my milo-ais, the sad sad news arrived….

“They have decided internally that YCF will be a one off campaign. There will be no more new YCF stuffs to see…"

My heart stopped. I pressed on for more details.

“It was some ‘management decision’ la due to unforeseen circumstances that they cant reveal. Whatever la…"

Ycf Aha. That must be a prank, I thought desperately…but wait…X was the lady who told us about the ‘Hou Wong’ TV commercial some 2 weeks before it was actually aired. X is also a senior person in Digi. She would not play such a big prank on me…

Alas, I have to accept the terrible truth that Yellow Man is finally going to disappear from the TVs and the local Digi roadshows, something I rather am very sad of….

Ugh! What the hell is going on?

I mean…. hey Yellow Man is probably the best marketing strategy I’ve seen or heard of in years and years, maybe even since the day I learned what advertisements meant. To me, this fellow is more recognizable than the Colonel Sanders or Ronald McDonald of the fast food industry.

Whats the rationale behind this sudden move to remove Yellow Man from our lives forever? Was it the unpopular video posted on YouTube where the nasty Celcom giant squashed the tiny fellow? Or was it the second episode, as if we were looking forward for more, when our cute dancing Yellow Man was burnt to death. I don’t know. Don’t ask me. I mean….haizzzz. What do you think?

But hey, can it be the pirated CDs and VCDs that prompted the Yellow Man to be abolished…? Nah, I don’t see Tom Cruise being escorted in cop-cars when I bought my pirated copy of Mission Impossible 3 DVD.

My dear fellow lovers of Yellow Man, lets not ever forget our much-adored icon. Yellow Man shall live eternally in the photos we took with them, and in our hearts. Our dances with them shall always be on our minds….come to think of it, they have a routine dance don’t they? Can anyone please send me a video of that? I am desperately looking for more ways to remember my favourite Malaysian symbol.

Here is my one and only contribution to the icon, a video I edited myself, in memory of our Yellow Man. Very bad quality la but what the heck, it’s my way to share my feelings. To those Yellow Man fans, please enjoy the last reminiscence of that our very own Yellow Teletubbie.

So sad, so sad. Hey guys, before it really happens, grab the opportunity man. You might never get any in your remaining lifetime. When you see Yellow Man walking across the road, or at Digi events, go take a photo, or exchange hugs, or even shake hands. Who knows you might be the last ever to take a photo with this fellow.

Hey another thing to share…I heard the pirated CDs and VCDs about Yellow Man are up for sale. You know, the local pasar malams and those strategic locations. Heard they are going fast, so anytime you come across one, better grab it. I shall miss their music forever. No no… I don’t work for those guys… just my random emotional thoughts of trying to grab whatever I can of the Yellow Man so I can share it to anyone when it is gone.

No more funny Yellow Man advertisements to tickle our funny bones. Remember the one where our icon was providing coverage for a jackass talking at the top of his voice in a cinema? I don’t know about you, but I really got me rolling off the floor laughing.

YcfNo more big Yellow Mans cheering at the Digi shows. These chubby fellas usually makes surprise visits, always manages to capture the heart of little children with their funny antics, making the crowd as lively as ever….. and their adults go crazy over. Look around when it happens, no one is blind enough not to see the joy it brings to everyone when he appears on the street.

It really makes me wonder. Is the ‘bully might’ of Celcom and Maxis that great? Goodness knows when they will pay the price for this.

It really saddens my heart, this move to put an end to Digi Yellow Man. I am sure all of us, the die-hard fans of Yellow Man will grieve….I mean, to think of it happening, Yellow Man….no more….

Ugh! it makes me sad and pissed off at the same time… why is this happening when the whole of Malaysia loves him and suddenly it stops??
